Leading Private Client Lawyer Joins McDermott in New York

    August 4, 2022

    Read time: 4 min

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Todd Angkatavanich has joined our Private Client Practice Group as a partner based in New York. Todd focuses his practice on advanced wealth transfer and succession planning.

“McDermott clients will immediately benefit from Todd’s impressive knowledge and experience,” said Bill Butler, global head of McDermott’s private client practice. “He is an industry leader, a creative thinker and a natural collaborator. We are excited Todd has chosen McDermott as he will be an immediate asset to our team.”

Todd regularly creates and implements wealth transfer planning and investment structures to provide for the orderly and tax-efficient transition of family assets from one generation to the next while facilitating the effective stewardship of family assets for future generations.

“When I thought about returning to the practice of law, McDermott was the obvious choice, given the deep bench of industry heavyweights, long-standing friendships and the firm’s top tier platform and client base,” Todd said. “I look forward to working on cutting-edge, sophisticated planning matters for affluent families and their family offices. It is a privilege to be joining the ranks of McDermott’s elite private client group.”

Todd represents both national and international families and family offices in structuring multigenerational wealth transfer, preservation and business succession vehicles, with an emphasis on navigating the transfer tax pitfalls that often arise under Chapter 14 of the Internal Revenue Code. His practice often involves structuring vehicles such as Sales to Grantor Trusts, GRATs, Family Limited Partnerships, Preferred “Freeze” Partnerships, as well as “Vertical” and “Non-Vertical” approaches to planning with carried interests in private investment vehicles.

Prior to joining McDermott, Todd was a National Tax Principal with EY and prior to that he co-headed the US Private Client & Tax group at an international law firm. He received his BA from Fairleigh Dickinson University, his JD and MBA from Rutgers University, and his LLM from New York University School of Law.

Todd is the second New York-based partner to join McDermott’s Private Client practice this year following the arrival of Daniel Hatten in April.

McDermott’s Private Client practice represents high-net-worth individuals, families and closely held businesses with an extraordinary focus on the client’s specific, unique objectives. The team of more than 110 lawyers is continually recognized as the top private client practice in the US and among the top practices worldwide. In 2022, McDermott’s private client practice was awarded the only national Band 1 ranking for Private Wealth Law in the US by Chambers High Net Worth, a guide dedicated to the global private wealth market.

McDermott Represents lifespin on Cooperative Scientific Agreement with Biobank and Medical University of Graz

    August 2, 2022

    Read time: 3 min

Frankfurt, August 2, 2022 – International law firm McDermott Will & Emery represented lifespin GmbH on the establishment of a research cooperation with Biobank Graz and the Clinical Department of Oncology of the Medical University of Graz.

Subject of the cooperation is the expansion of lifespin’s proprietary database of metabolic human health profiles in the field of oncology. Under the agreement, lifespin will be able to analyze and capture the metabolic profiles from more than 25,000 longitudinal human blood samples involving approximately 4,800 oncological patients. This significant expansion of lifespin’s existing and proprietary database will enable lifespin to further improve the existing algorithms of lifespin’s proprietary software to help healthcare providers detect disease earlier and more reliably tailor treatment and monitoring options for patients using metabolomics as a valuable guide.

lifespin GmbH, based in Regensburg, Germany, with offices in Boston, is a deep-data company that combines biology, deep data, artificial intelligence and cloud technologies that maps the metabolic profiles of healthy and diseases people to enable precision diagnostics and personalised disease management. The company is developing an automated, highly scalable and cost-effective platform for next-generation health diagnostics. By using artificial intelligence and machine learning, deviations in a person’s metabolism from the healthy baseline of relevant peer groups can be identified in their database.

Biobank Graz, Austria, is one of the largest clinical biobanks in the world, storing around 20 million individual samples of body fluids and human tissue.

The McDermott team was led by counsel Monika Richter and comprised partner Deniz Tschammler, counsel Jana Grieb and associate Katharina Hoffmeister.

    PRESS RELEASE

    McDermott Launches Post-Roe Resource Center

    August 1, 2022

    Read time: 4 min

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery launched its new online Post-Roe Resource Center as the next step in its ongoing cross-practice efforts to help clients navigate the widespread legal uncertainties concerning the delivery of reproductive and family planning services, as well as the provision of reproductive and family planning benefits following the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision by the Supreme Court of the United States overturning Roe v. Wade.

The Resource Center brings together the multidisciplinary skills and experience of more than 40 McDermott lawyers at the forefront of monitoring the evolving landscape and analyzing the ruling’s broad impact on US organizations. Leveraging the long-standing reproductive health/women’s initiative within the Firm’s top-ranked Healthcare Practice Group, McDermott assembled this team of lawyers in early May, weeks before the Dobbs decision was issued. The team includes lawyers who counsel clients on healthcare regulatory compliance, employee benefits, employment, privacy and cybersecurity, and healthcare litigation and enforcement defense.

“Overturning Roe has triggered widespread legal uncertainty, and our team has been navigating clients across industries through these tremendous uncertainties for months now, providing counsel on the myriad challenges they are now facing, including a wide array of compliance and risk mitigation issues,” said McDermott partner and team co-chair David Quinn Gacioch, who focuses his practice on healthcare litigation and enforcement defense.

“McDermott has long been actively counseling clients on issues related reproductive health, and it was a natural extension of that effort to gather all of our cross-practice resources into one place for our clients,” said McDermott partner and team co-chair Stacey L. Callaghan, who regularly counsels healthcare entities on transactional, regulatory and compliance issues. “This Resource Center reflects that result.” Stacey also co-leads McDermott’s Women’s Digital Health Initiative.

“The Dobbs decision has forced companies across all industries to immediately evaluate whether and how to offer reproductive health and family planning services and benefits,” said team co-chair Sarah G. Raaii, who focuses her practice on healthcare benefits. “Our team is uniquely well-equipped to counsel companies on the numerous legal issues that impact any organization with offices in multiple states.”

The Resource Center is a one-stop location for the most up-to-date thought leadership on key issues such as evolving state-by-state regulations, care coordination, employee benefits, enforcement and litigation, data rights and privacy, telehealth, government strategies, pharmacy-specific implications and workforce management. Information currently available on the Resource Center includes the following:

“McDermott’s IP practice has undergone significant strategic growth over the last 18 months, and we are excited to welcome these latest additions to the McDermott team,” William Gaede, head of the Firm’s Global Intellectual Property Practice Group, said. “Chuck’s experience elevates the profile of our group while complementing our existing Boston practice. At the same time, Ryan, Aashish and Sammy are key parts of the team of elite practitioners in Austin that have already boosted our practice’s strength in intellectual property.”

In addition to the eight-partner team in Austin announced last month, strategic IP partner hires over the last 18 months include Simon Roberts, Jason Leonard, Maxwell “Mac” Fox, Douglas H. Carsten and Adam W. Burrowbridge.

As both a US patent lawyer and English solicitor, Chuck provides clients with sophisticated transatlantic counsel in patent portfolio strategy and transactions, with a particular emphasis in the medical technology space. Chuck received his JD from Duke University School of Law and is licensed to practice in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as before the EPO. He joins McDermott from White & Case.

“McDermott’s depth of services across the IP lifecycle as well as its leading brand in healthcare and life sciences made this move a natural fit,” Chuck said. “McDermott’s global platform will be a great strength to my clients across the medical technology industry.”

Ryan, Aashish and Sammy join their former Baker Botts colleagues Kevin Meek, Syed Fareed, Stephen Hash, Paula Heyman, Brian Oaks, Margaret Sampson, Nick Schuneman and Brett Thompsen.

Ryan represents clients in complex patent and trademark litigation, often involving multiple patents and defendants. He manages global patent and trademark portfolios, helps develop clients’ internal patent processes and advises on intellectual property due diligence for M&A transactions. Ryan received his JD from the University of Illinois College of Law.

Aashish focuses on patent litigation, post-grant trials and patent prosecution. His background in electrical and computer engineering gives him strategic insight into his clients’ vital technologies. He offers multifaceted representation across all phases of complex patent litigation, from pre-suit strategy and early motion practice through claim construction, discovery and summary judgment. Aashish received his JD from The University of Texas School of Law.

Sammy guides clients through every stage of patent litigation. She has experience in a wide range of technical areas, including life sciences, data storage devices, internet technology, mobile apps, software and consumer hardware devices. She represents clients before the International Trade Commission, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and US district courts. Sammy received her JD from The University of Texas School of Law.
