McDermott Releases Legal Industry’s First of its Kind Interactive State Law Privacy Map

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery announced the release of an interactive map summarizing all of the recently enacted US state privacy laws. Unique from other state maps which are static, McDermott’s map immediately provides the user with analysis of any state’s enacted privacy legislation, along with the ability to download and print both legislative details and practical guidance and analysis.
“Our goal in creating this state privacy law map was to provide an interactive and informational tool that did not yet exist,” said David Saunders, a partner in McDermott’s Global Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice and one of the Firm leaders of the initiative. “Our goal is for our state privacy map to be the ‘go-to’ resource for anyone looking to quickly understand the obligations that each state consumer privacy law imposes on companies.”
McDermott’s interactive map provides the following key features:
- Clickable states which have enacted consumer privacy laws
- Bite-size summaries of the primary information for each state’s consumer privacy law, including the title of the law, statute and regulation citations, effective date, applicability thresholds and links to related McDermott resources for further analysis
- Links to download and print a full report of each state’s consumer privacy legislation
The map will be continuously updated with the latest available information when a new law is enacted.
“With an increasingly complex landscape of laws, McDermott’s interactive state privacy map will be of enormous help to users seeking to understand the regulatory and compliance challenges they face when handling consumer information,” said Amy Pimentel, a partner in McDermott’s Global Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice who also spearheaded the map’s creation.

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery represented Iron Path Capital, a private equity firm focused on lower-middle market investments across the specialty industrial and healthcare sectors, in its backed company PureTech Scientific’s acquisition of The Chemours Company’s Glycolic Acid business. With this acquisition, PureTech Scientific is positioning itself to become the global leader in organic synthesis of ultra-high purity alpha hydroxy acids for the Life Sciences and Specialty Chemical industries.
The transaction was announced on June 1, 2023 and is expected to close by the third quarter of 2023, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
The cross-border McDermott deal team was led by Hunter Sharp with support from Krist Werling, David Wolff, Ben Kryder, David Ivill, Terrance Brennan, Delaney Prunty and Jacob Hollinger.

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce the addition of Partner Jonathan Ching to the Firm’s Transactions Practice Group in New York. Jonathan will draw on his in-house experience at leading banks and investment institutions to provide clients with practical and strategic investment advice.
“Clients continue to seek transactions in commodities, fintech and structured finance, three areas Jonathan has substantial experience navigating,” said Harris Siskind, global head of the Firm’s transactions practice. “Jonathan will serve clients whose products span several natural resources and commodities, including crude oil and refined products, base and precious metals, agricultural products, natural gas liquids and renewables.”
Jonathan focuses his practice on structured transactions that involve derivatives, commodities and both digital and traditional asset classes. He routinely structures, negotiates, documents and handles the administrative aspects of physical and financial commodity transactions, including inventory financing and monetization, intermediation arrangements, secured finance and lien-based structures and master agreements for energy markets.
Additionally, he advises market participants on the regulatory challenges that arise from cryptocurrencies, trading, clearing and settlement solutions using distributed ledger technology. Jonathan has advised leading financial institutions on platforms for cross-currency payments, overnight repo and digital asset derivatives. He also has significant experience advising clients on regulatory matters in connection with mortgage and other asset-backed securitizations, particularly in relation to US credit risk retention and Volcker Rule issues. His transactional and regulatory experience includes all derivative-related aspects of the Dodd-Frank Act (Title VII).
