    PRESS RELEASE

McDermott Sponsors Equal Justice Works Fellow to Advocate for Immigrant Rights

    July 8, 2024

    Read time: 3 min

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery has partnered with Equal Justice Works (EJW) to facilitate projects for its Fellowship Class of 2024, which includes more than 84 law school graduates. Through the partnership, the Firm will sponsor Fellow Annie Whitney, who plans to spend her two-year fellowship at New York Legal Assistance Group challenging egregious due process violations in Immigration Court.

Annie’s work will ensure respect for the right to seek asylum and protect the rights of those fleeing persecution. It is among the many critical initiatives that McDermott and other firms, nonprofits and legal organizations seek to address through the EJW Fellowship program to increase equal access to justice for underserved communities.

Since the spring of 2022, more than 160,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City from Texas. Despite legal protections, New York’s Immigration Courts face significant challenges, including overburdened caseloads and systemic due process violations. Many asylum seekers are wrongly deported, potentially forced to return to places where they fear persecution.

Annie will take a multifaceted approach to address these issues:

    • Direct Representation: Challenging wrongful deportation orders through direct legal representation, advocating for fair hearings and due process rights.
    • “Know Your Rights” Sessions: Hosting workshops at migrant shelters and community centers, empowering asylum seekers with essential information.
    • Toolkit Development: Building resources for lawyers and pro se litigants, equipping them to effectively challenge due process violations in Immigration Court.

“We are thrilled to sponsor Annie, and we firmly believe that her advocacy will significantly benefit our communities and beyond. This partnership underscores our shared commitment to fighting for the protection of rights for all,” said Elizabeth Lewis, Firm-wide pro bono and community service partner at McDermott. “We stand behind EJW’s mission to activate lawyers’ passion for equal justice and inspire a lifelong commitment to public service.”

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery welcomes Brian Glennon as a partner in its Litigation Practice Group in Los Angeles. As an experienced trial lawyer, Brian brings a wealth of knowledge in complex commercial litigation, including securities fraud class actions, shareholder derivative lawsuits and US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) enforcement actions. He has also represented all of the major accounting firms in auditor liability matters, including administrative proceedings and at trial. He joins from Latham & Watkins LLP, where he served as Global Co-Chair of the Securities Litigation & Professional Liability Practice Group.

“Brian’s practice nicely complements our existing strengths in shareholder litigation, accountant liability matters and SEC enforcement actions, all areas of continued client demand,” said Steven Scholes, global head of McDermott’s Litigation Practice Group. “Additionally, his longstanding relationships with the major accounting and consulting firms will further strengthen our West Coast practice.”

Brian has achieved complete defense victories at trial on claims totaling nearly $3 billion and has obtained several dismissals of multibillion-dollar securities class actions in multiple jurisdictions. He has represented clients across many industries, including the financial institutions, energy, infrastructure and technology sectors.

His notable client representations on public company matters include Oracle, LogMeIn, Insight Enterprises, Avago and Hudson Pacific Properties, among others.

Brian is the Immediate Past Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar’s Litigation Section, and he currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Complex Courts Committee.  Following his graduation from Berkeley Law, Brian served as a law clerk to the Honorable Gary A. Feess of the US District Court for the Central District of California.

“I am thrilled to join McDermott at this point in my career,” Brian said. “There is a powerful synergy between my practice and the Firm’s strong global litigation platform. I have always had so much respect for the lawyers at McDermott, and I’m very excited to work with my new team.”

Brian’s arrival follows the addition of former EY and PWC general counsel Ron Hauben, who serves as co-head of McDermott’s accounting defense practice. The Firm’s Litigation Practice Group has experienced robust growth over the past year, most recently welcoming Amy Bentsen (Boring) as a partner in Atlanta last month as well as a seven-lawyer white-collar litigation team from Orrick earlier this year.

Schulte Roth & Zabel is pleased to announce that after a rigorous application process, the Pro Bono Committee has selected Sabrina Singh as the 2024 Brooks Burdette Fellow. While continuing to receive full pay and benefits as a Schulte employee, Sabrina will be fully embedded for six months Partners in Health (“PIH”).

For over three decades, PIH has fought injustice by providing care first to those who need it most. PIH delivers high-quality healthcare and social services in some of the poorest corners of the world. By partnering with local governments and communities to design and deliver public health programs, PIH has emerged as the global leader in delivering health services in poor and under-resourced settings.

As the 2024 Fellow, Sabrina will support PIH in several ways, joining PIH’s small but mighty in-house legal team. The PIH legal team supports all PIH healthcare delivery and university sites across PIH’s global footprint. The Fellow reviews contracts and memorandums of understandings associated with PIH programs, responds to legal questions from the global PIH community, and reviews policies and procedures through the lens of regulatory compliance. The Fellow will assist with special projects, review and advise on new and evolving legal requirements affecting PIH sites, and work with donors and collaborators in support of PIH’s mission.

Sabrina is a second-year real estate associate. Since Sabrina joined the firm in March 2022, Sabrina has worked with more than 13 pro bono clients, managing lease negotiations and real estate finance, construction finance, licensing and purchase and sales transactions, as well as working on amicus briefs, participating in immigration clinics and supporting survivors of domestic violence in their divorce proceedings. Sabrina received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in February 2022, where she began volunteering for the ACLU’s ICE Detention Center Bail Release Application Project, the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation and Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen. Prior to law school, Sabrina worked for Habitat for Humanity in Chile.

    About Brooks Burdette

In 2009, Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP created the Brooks Burdette Fellowship in honor of the late litigation partner who was a long-time chair of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and whose commitment to public interest work while at the firm was exemplary. Brooks was a board member of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and was the first chair of the Board of Democracy Prep, a Harlem charter school.
