McDermott Will & Schulte announced that Julia Winters has joined the Firm as a partner in its Business Restructuring group in New York. Julia arrives from Katten and focuses on restructuring and commercial disputes in bankruptcy, state and federal courts.
Julia’s arrival adds senior bankruptcy litigation experience to one of the Firm’s busiest transactional practices and builds on continued growth in New York. Her work for indenture trustees, creditor groups, litigation trusts, debtors and independent directors complements the Firm’s private capital practice, particularly when investments move into distressed or contested situations.
“Based on the breadth of our private capital practice, there are times when restructuring issues and disputes arise,” said Harris Siskind, Global Head of the Transactions Practice Group. “Julia is a seasoned bankruptcy litigator who can take the lead on those matters from day one. Adding her in New York gives our clients another senior lawyer who knows how to navigate the most difficult points in a restructuring.”
Julia has represented clients in a wide range of restructuring-related disputes, including matters involving indenture trustees, creditors, independent directors and other parties in bankruptcy proceedings. Her representative experience includes disputes arising from major energy, healthcare, offshore drilling and retail bankruptcy cases.
“What appealed to me was the opportunity to work alongside lawyers who are already close to the investors, lenders and companies involved in distressed situations,” Julia said. “My practice has always started with understanding the commercial objective behind the dispute, and I’m looking forward to bringing that perspective to the restructuring practice and its clients.”
Earlier in her career, Julia worked as a bankruptcy litigation analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence and as a senior distressed debt legal analyst at Reorg Research, experience that informs the business perspective she brings to contentious matters.
