In a recent STAT News article, Caroline Reignley discusses CMS’s final 2027 Physician Fee Schedule policy barring providers from using third-party vendors to deliver remote patient monitoring (RPM) services, along with the two-year implementation delay that came with it.

Caroline said the final rule was better than most stakeholders expected, and that the delay is a meaningful opening. It gives vendors, providers, and other stakeholders two more rulemaking cycles to submit data and propose alternatives, and gives Congress time to act (bipartisan lawmakers have already written to CMS opposing the changes). She also said CMS’s responses to comments were brief and didn’t explain why less onerous alternatives wouldn’t meet its goals.
