In a recent Chief Investment Officer article, Peter Naismith discussed how family offices are taking a more active and selective approach to private markets, with many increasingly considering direct investments, co-investments and customized investment structures.

Peter noted that family offices with the resources to take a more hands-on approach may favor structures that offer greater flexibility and control.

“Families are becoming more interested in separately managed accounts,” Peter said. “If they have the resources that allow them to pursue that option with a manager, they tend to prefer that over a commingled fund. In some cases, it can give them more rights in terms of liquidity or termination.”

He also highlighted the continued customization within private credit, which can require family offices to conduct careful diligence when evaluating potential fund investments.
