McDermott Will & Schulte expands funds platform with return of Cerberus COO of asset-backed opportunities

Overview

International law firm McDermott Will & Schulte is pleased to announce that William (Bill) Kloos has rejoined the firm as a partner in its Transactions Practice Group in New York. Bill returns to the firm after spending more than a decade as counsel and chief operating officer of the asset-backed opportunities platform at global alternative investment firm Cerberus.

Bill’s arrival reinforces the firm’s strengths advising alternative investment funds. In a market where private capital has expanded rapidly in recent years and broadened across industries, he brings trusted relationships with leading asset managers and experience advising across credit, private equity, and fund structuring and formation.

“Bill is an incredibly talented lawyer with a rare combination of deep technical funds experience and leadership skills,” said Harris Siskind, global head of McDermott’s Transactions Practice Group. “We’ve worked with Bill closely for nearly two decades, both as a client and in-house, and he truly is the best of the best. His return materially adds to our investment funds platform, deepens our key sponsor relationships, and positions us for continued growth with several of our most seasoned clients.”

“Bill’s return is a proud moment for all of us. He started his career at the firm, and over the last decade-plus he has built an invaluable sponsor-side perspective,” said Jason Kaplan, global co-head of McDermott’s Investment Management group. “Bringing his skill sets to our platform will further strengthen how we advise investment managers and sponsors as they structure, launch, and operate funds in an increasingly complex global market.”

Bill’s background fundraising with LPs and cultivating a broad sponsor network aligns with investors’ heightened focus on strong governance and institutional-grade infrastructure. In his prior roles as counsel and chief operating officer of the asset-backed opportunities platform, he was responsible for developing and overseeing legal policies and procedures in close coordination with McDermott partners.

“I’m excited to return to the firm where I began my career, particularly at such an active time in the funds space,” Bill said. “The team has built an exceptional investment management platform, and I’m eager to collaborate with my colleagues to support our sponsor clients and help drive the next phase of growth.”
