McDermott Represents National Health Law Program in Research Supporting Black Transgender, Gender Nonconforming and Intersex Individuals
DEAL ANNOUNCEMENT
June 9, 2022
Read time: 4 min
International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is proud to announce a cross-office team assisted the National Health Law Program (NHeLP) with a pro bono project aimed at compiling data, resources and research on the health disparities and needs of Black transgender, gender nonconforming and intersex individuals (TGI). NHeLP is using the research to develop an in-depth paper on the topic in order to set the stage for future advocacy work.
“Our research has revealed that there is very little medical, legal or psychosocial research on the topic of Black TGI individuals’ health needs,” Greg Fosheim, co-lead for the project and a partner in McDermott’s Healthcare Practice Group, said.
“With McDermott’s support, NHeLP is taking a deep dive into this subject in order to develop critical resources advocating for structural change in our healthcare system and to pursue legal strategies to improve health care access,” Elizabeth Taylor, NHeLP executive director, added.
NHeLP protects and advances health rights of low-income and underserved individuals and families. It advocates, educates and litigates at the federal and state levels to advance health and civil rights in the United States. The goal of the project is to call attention to the inequities that Black TGI individuals face in the healthcare system and highlight the need for more research and advocacy in this area.
The McDermott team was led by Drew McCormick and Greg Fosheim with additional support from Montserrat Alvarenga, Jennifer Berman, Stacey Callaghan, Dexter Golinghorst, John Hoffman, Taylor Edward Hood, Lauren Knizner, Vincent Leahey, Marika Miller, Cathy Ren, Kevin Wang and Patrick Zanayed.

But there is still more to do, which is why we are raising the bar yet again to create more equitable workplaces and a better tomorrow for LGBTQ+ workers everywhere. Congratulations to McDermott Will & Emery for achieving the title of ‘best places to work for LGBTQ+ equality’ and working to advance inclusion in the workplace.”
The results of the 2022 CEI showcase how 1,271 U.S.-based companies are not only promoting LGBTQ+-friendly workplace policies in the U.S., but also for the 56% of CEI-rated companies with global operations who are helping advance the cause of LGBTQ+ inclusion in workplaces abroad.
