More Than a Decade at the Top; McDermott Earns 11th Chambers USA Band 1 Healthcare Practice National Ranking

    April 27, 2020

    Read time: 5 min

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce its Healthcare Group received a national Band 1 ranking for the eleventh year in a row in the 2020 edition of Chambers USA. After more than a decade at the top, the Firm is once again the only one to rank Band 1 nationally. The Health team also earned Band 1 state-level rankings for its healthcare practices in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts and Washington, DC. Additionally, the team also earned the national Spotlight Table ranking for the Privacy and Data Security: Healthcare category. In addition, nearly half of the Healthcare Industry Advisory group partners were individually ranked.

Chambers praised McDermott’s Health Industry Advisory practice as a “well-established and highly respected healthcare powerhouse which handles complex, multijurisdictional transactions for high-profile clients.” Noting that several lawyers are recognized as leaders in the field, the “large and impressively versatile team offers well-honed expertise in all areas of healthcare law, including data privacy matters, government investigations and a wide range of issues affecting health insurers.” Clients provided similarly impressive remarks, noting our “extraordinary depth” and ability to provide “experts in diverse areas of law…in each case.“ One interviewee recognized “McDermott to be the biggest and most well-rounded healthcare team and another added our “lawyers are customer-focused and have a strong knowledge base.”

“We are honored to have Chambers USA once again acknowledge what our clients already know,” said Eric Zimmerman, global lead of McDermott’s Health Advisory practice. “This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to clients and their critical missions, underscoring we are a firm they can trust especially during these unknown times now and to come. We work hard every day to fully understand and support our clients’ business goals, and are thrilled this effort is validated through a highly coveted ranking of peer-review and independent research.”

Chambers USA ranked 31 healthcare lawyers across seven states, including 11 in the top-tier Band 1 grouping. Four lawyers were added to the rankings for the first time and three jumped ranks from the previous year. Firm partners with 2020 Band 1 rankings include Bernadette Broccolo, Stephen W. Bernstein, Ira Coleman, Gary Scott Davis, Christopher M. Jedrey, James F. Owens, Michael W. Peregrine, Kerrin Slattery, Jerry J. Sokol and Eric Zimmerman.

McDermott is the nation’s leading health law firm. The Health Industry Advisory group is the only health practice to receive Tier 1 national rankings from all major legal directories. This includes Chambers USA, which also awarded McDermott “Health Team of the Year” in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019. The Firm also ranked #1 in PitchBook’s 2019 League Tables as the most active firm for health care private equity, securing 35% more private equity backed healthcare transactions than the second-place firm.
