Areon Chan is a member of the Government Investigations & Compliance team in London, focusing on complex government and internal investigations, compliance advisory work, data privacy and Life Sciences regulatory and compliance matters.

Prior to joining McDermott, Areon was with an international US law firm in Hong Kong.

Areon speaks fluent English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Investigations and Compliance

• Assisted on investigations carried out for a major US-listed pharmaceutical and medical device conglomerate in relation to allegations of bribery, corruption and internal controls in the PRC, India and Saudi Arabia, as well as allegations of senior employee misconduct in India*
• Assisted on advice to a leading multinational life sciences company on compliance and regulatory matters in Asia including direct-to-consumer advertisements, disease awareness programs, non-promotional events and grant reviews
• Assisted on advice to a leading US market infrastructure provider in connection with the acquisition of a Hong Kong-headquartered alternative market operator on due diligence in the context of the FCPA, AML and employment requirements*

Data Privacy and Cybersecurity

• Assisted on advising a leading multinational life sciences company on employment and data privacy matters in Asia, including COVID-19 vaccination-related policies and the collection, storage and transfer of sensitive health data*
• Assisted on advice to a multinational insurance brokerage firm on privacy issues arising from the expansion of their operations into Hong Kong and the PRC, including direct marketing and data localization requirements, as well as compliance with the PIPL*

Global Arbitration & Litigation

• Assisted on the representation of two PRC financial firms in HKIAC proceedings arising from a dispute of their investments in a semi-conductor company. The arbitration involved unique elements of bribery-related offences under PRC criminal law*
• Assisted on the representation of a real estate investment company (with a substantial real estate investment portfolio in the PRC) in opposing a winding-up petition in the High Court of Hong Kong*
