Charlie Seidell focuses on high-stakes statutory, constitutional, and administrative law matters in federal and state courts, having briefed dozens of complex appellate matters, including certiorari-stage and merits cases before the US Supreme Court. His experience includes drafting cert petitions, briefs in opposition, amicus briefs, and merits briefs, as well as arguing appeals before the US Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and Seventh Circuits.
Charlie’s practice includes dispositive motion work at the trial-court level, with a particular emphasis on litigation under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). He has helped clients successfully challenge unlawful state and federal regulations and develop coordinated litigation and public records strategies to advance broader advocacy objectives. Charlie has represented clients in administrative and appellate matters across a range of industries.
Charlie serves as co-director of Yale Law School’s Supreme Court Advocacy Clinic, where he teaches Supreme Court practice and supervises pro bono litigation before the Court. Prior to joining McDermott Will & Schulte, he clerked for the Honorable Diana Gribbon Motz of the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. While in law school, Charlie interned with the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Civil Division, and served as an articles editor of the Yale Law Journal.

- Prevailed in Fourth Circuit appeal to successfully invalidate portions of an unlawful state tax.
- Prevailed in an APA challenge in the US District Court for the District of Columbia to successfully overturn agency limitations on the use of 340B drugs.
- Won a significant FOIA case in the US District Court for the District of Columbia to obtain critical records for a client and restrict agency invocations of the deliberative process privilege.
