Overview

The fourth edition of Chambers Global Practice Guides: Doing Business In… has been published at a time when the world’s economy is facing many uncertainties. The direct effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have now faded, although not entirely. Restrictions on travelling to certain countries remain, and China recently locked down entire cities, provoking a shortage of materials on the global markets.

Despite all the chaos the world experienced in the past two years, the global economy did not collapse as could have been expected. The spectacular economic downturn that occurred in the first half of 2020 was followed by a rebound in the second half of the year. The World Bank now forecasts an overall increase in economic growth for 2021 of 5.7%, although the pace of the recovery may substantially differ in the various regions of the world.

The guide, co-edited by McDermott partners Jacques Buhart and Nicolas Lafont, provides the latest legal information on restrictions to foreign investments, corporate vehicles, employment law, tax law, competition law, intellectual property (IP), data protection and upcoming legal reforms.

The US legal system is composed of several coexisting layers of laws that work in concert. As a federation of states, the District of Columbia and several self-governing territories, the USA has two primary levels of legal systems that exist in parallel: (i) the federal government that establishes laws for all of the USA and its people; and (ii) the state governments that govern their respective geographical area and residents.
